Alan Gouveia is one of our esteemed GRC Experts at Reciprocity. As an experienced governance and compliance professional, he is one of the first people our Sales team turn to when they need to close a deal with a new customer. And, thanks to his considerable experience in process development and improvement, he’s also an invaluable resource for our customers when they are looking for additional support as they navigate the complex world of governance, risk and compliance.
Alan’s Journey
A native Hawaiian, Alan got his start in the airline industry over 20 years ago, providing regulatory compliance support for Hawaiian Airlines, the largest operator of commercial flights to and from the U.S. state of Hawaii. His responsibilities ranged from customer service policies and procedures to FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations. His introduction to IT Compliance, though, wasn’t completely expected:
“I had a counterpart at the airline who handled the automation and technology, and whenever he introduced new solutions, I worked with him on compliance issues. When he left, he recommended me as his replacement – much to my surprise! – as it turned out I knew the technology and reservation systems as well as he did,” Alan says.
Time for a Change
10 years ago, Alan decided it was time for a change, so he moved to Colorado. It was while working for the City and County of Denver as their Manager of IT Governance that he learned more about, and eventually transitioned to IT security… which led to his current role at Reciprocity.
“I really enjoy what I’m doing now. I get to meet so many people, and then help them come up with solutions to their problems – even if it’s just validating what they already know,” he explains. “They consider me a trusted advisor and I appreciate that so much.
“Each new project is a little like having a child, but not having to be responsible for it for the next 18+ years,” he jokes.
The Right Role
Speaking of children, Alan and his husband have a few of those as well. Their six kids range in age from 10 – 16 years old, and keep them both very busy. They’re an incredibly active family, hiking when the weather is nice, and skiing and snowboarding in the winter. Travel also plays a big part in their lives – in fact, the entire family went to England and Ireland a couple of years ago.
“Reciprocity provided me with the first role that really fit with our lifestyle, allowing me to work remotely – even before the pandemic hit – so that I can be at home just in case the kids need anything, while my husband goes into the office,” he says. “Don’t get me wrong, I’ve worked for some really great companies. But honestly, I can’t see myself ever working anywhere else.”
The Path Forward
Reciprocity’s mission is to support companies with goals that are good for society, which includes improving customer privacy – and this is exactly what Alan does every day. Whether it’s supporting our customers, supporting Reciprocity, or supporting his family, he’s always the best man for the job!
