Reciprocity is committed to providing the industry’s leading compliance and risk management solutions. So, it should come as no surprise that compliance and risk management play a big role inside the company as well – with leaders like Compliance Analyst Dan Kiehl leading the way.
The Journey to Compliance
Dan didn’t always want to be in compliance. After joining the Army Reserve after high school, he went on to earn his Juris Doctor (JD) degree and become a lawyer. However, after spending much of the next few years in court practicing divorce and criminal law, he realized it was time for a change.
I decided to get my LLM (aka Master of Laws) degree for healthcare compliance, which is the ‘gold standard’ in terms of how compliance programs are run. This introduced me to healthcare consulting, which led to my interest in privacy consulting and compliance…and I’ve been doing it ever since.
It’s All in the Details
One of the biggest lessons Dan learned from his military service was attention to detail. Paying attention to the details is a big part of being a lawyer, and an even bigger part of being a Compliance Analyst. To ensure your company is compliant, you need to be certain that your organization is fulfilling every part of every requirement that you’ve said you’re going to satisfy.
In the military, they teach you that in addition to being quick, you have to pay attention to the details – because sometimes those details can mean the difference between life and death. While it’s a completely different situation when doing audits, details are still incredibly important. You need to check every element of every control – really nitpick the details – for your company to be compliant with the different information security and privacy standards.
Twists and Turns
Something else Dan has learned along the way is to be open to the unexpected changes that life presents, as they can lead to amazing opportunities – both in your life and your career.
I think it’s really important to be open to the twists and turns your career presents. When I graduated law school, I definitely didn’t imagine myself being a Compliance Analyst – and enjoying it so much. These twists and turns led me to so many more opportunities than I’d imagined possible, and it couldn’t have happened if I hadn’t been open to them.

Reciprocity continues to grow at an exponential rate, which is creating new career opportunities for people like Dan, who are always ready for the next challenge. We know there is much more to come from Dan, so definitely keep an eye on him – and his LinkedIn profile – to track his career!
