Software engineers are crucial to the success of SaaS companies like Reciprocity. So, we’re very lucky when we can have a software engineer like Tanja Miličić join the team. From developing application process integrations (aka APIs) to streamlining our real-time processing capabilities, she plays an important role in the development and maintenance of our award-winning governance, compliance, and risk (GRC) platform.
Tanja’s Journey
Tanja didn’t always want to work with software. She wanted to be an artist. However, as she knew it wouldn’t be easy to support herself by creating original artwork, she decided to compromise. So, at school, she studied Art History and Computer Science, with an emphasis on software.
At times, software development can be more art than science. Every piece of software carries a style in the coding or design that is unique to its developer. Software developers start with a vision and use scientific tools to bring that vision to life. They refine the product, add finishing touches, and – like any work of art – they look at it from every angle to ensure it is exactly how they want it to be.
When I’m working with software, I have to keep adapting and adjusting the code, as things are constantly evolving. This gives me the opportunity to do what I really love to do – create things.
Working Anywhere, and Everywhere
Software engineers can work anywhere – easily – thanks to the flexibility of their profession. With access to the internet and a laptop, they can dedicate themselves to working on software development and writing code from any location. This means Tanja has had the opportunity to work in several countries. From her native Croatia, to Slovenia, to the Netherlands, and now back to Slovenia, she’s been able to experience multiple cultures – all while being able to work on interesting projects that enabled her to expand her software knowledge and skills.
After being confined to a small apartment during the pandemic, my partner and I decided we wanted to live somewhere where we could spend more time outdoors, in nature. So, moving back to Slovenia was an easy decision – it’s a beautiful country, with mountains, forests, and lakes, not to mention great food. We’re in the process of buying our first home – it borders on a national park, which I’m very excited about!
Culture is Key
After working for different companies in different countries, Tanja has been able to experience many cultures, both regional and corporate. So, culture now plays a big part in her career choices. When she started looking for a new opportunity earlier this year, she knew she wanted to work for a company that would provide interesting projects and enable her to learn new skills. She wanted to work with a team that would have the flexibility to really research solutions to problems, instead of just writing code. And she wanted to be able to continue working remotely. Lucky for us: she wanted to work for Reciprocity.
I really enjoy the culture at Reciprocity. My team is fantastic, and I appreciate that we have so much flexibility – while we are focused on the company’s goals, we also have the ability to research new solutions when we see something that can be improved. Right now, I’m learning a lot about real-time processing and how we can use it to reduce our data processing time.
The Next Challenge
Reciprocity continues to grow at an exponential rate, which is creating new career opportunities for people like Tanja, who are always ready for the next challenge. We know there is much more to come from Tanja, so definitely keep an eye on her – and her LinkedIn profile – to track her career!
